William Hawken was a brother to the famed Samuel and Jacob Hawken who went west to St. Louis and started outfitting the mountain men heading to the Rockies. But before 1840, William’s shop was in Hagerstown, MD and this fullstock .43 caliber rifle turned up in a local Virginia widow’s closet. One of our curators was helping identify her collection of arms and commented on the significance of this piece. A nice little bit of local history was quickly donated by the good widow.

There was a display at a Denver gun show of earlier rifles built by earlier Hawken family members......I wish I had a photo of it. Lots of folks not aware of the longevity of the family business before the fame of Jacob and Samuel Hawken.
