Steve

it almost looks like a "campaign hat" with the holes for either a chin strap or stampede string. Color, hat band and brim and crown makes me think that's the style it is. Crown left for self expression or if a regulation style for perhaps a "Montana Peak" as worn by post 1900 US military/ state trooper or Canadian Mountie?????......although I think Mounties had leather hat bands.

Very cool....would love to have one!

I thought it was a later made hat and I like to try and keep posts in our time frame but I thought it was worth sharing.

Thanks Pards.

Steve

It could be earlier and if so probably an officer's model. I confess I know less about post 1880's military equipment than earlier......although I' ain't much of an expert on anything!

It's obviously a worn hat but it almost appears that the crown was never actually shaped....especially in a Montana Peak style........but I'm glad you shared it in any case!

...actually Steve it looks very much like the hats you see in so many Russell paintings.......

I always love the style but could never find it in a size that would fit my pumpkin!........without spending a couple hundred bucks on a custom hat. :D

A few years back, I was in a Western Wear Store in Spokane. They had a "Boss of the Plains" hat by Stetson.. It looked just like this one.
In reality, the Boss of the Plains was most likely the most popular hat Stetson use to sell.
