Ranger Captain Leander McNelly is sporting two Colt .45 cal 7-1/2 inch Peacemakers and a Model 1873 Winchester carbine in 38 cal. Our hero had double crossed gun belts which allowed him to carry both 38 cal. and 45 cal. ammo. A short time later Colt pistols were chambered in the same caliber ammo as the Winchester thus allowing men to carry the same ammo for both pistol and rifle making for a reduction in weight, ease of reloading, and an increase in comfort to both horse and rider.
