Even though the guns were probably put there to add to the photograph they never could be far from hand for ones safety.

The dog was looking for the cat. :)

Many Period pictures were often posed with one's possessions prominently featured as a way of showing off" or to say 'Look what we've got." And one's best clothes.

My wife's great grandparents and great grandparents posed for a picture in the late 1880's so that the oil wells on their property were in view. But while they brought out chairs for the old folks to sit for the photograph, they brought out and put in the picture their Edison type phonograph like it was a family member.
