In 1875 James Buchanan Gillett (1856-1937) enlisted in Captain Dan W. Robert’s Company D of the Frontier Battalion of Texas Rangers. He spent the next six years with the Rangers. While patroling the Texas frontier, Gillett fought the Kiowa and Comanche Indians, cattle thieves, and outlaws of every type and description. In this previously unpublished tintype Gillett wears a low crown, wide-brimmed hat. A long overcoat covers his vest and shirt. His cartridge belt is visible, but the coat conceals his revolver and holster. Gillette also wears a pair of flap and fringe leggings which are decorated with beadwork around the outer edge of the flap and at the bottom of the leg opening. The leggings are typical of those worn by southern plains Indians and are most likely Kiowa or Comanche in origin. Source: Lawrence T. Jones III.
