As I recall these were military matches, because I remember discussion about infantry model trapdoors being used.......I have a little red book packed away that has some relationship to early 45-70 guns........I won't be able to find my copy but I may be able to discover it on line.

It may have been from "Sharps Rifle, The Gun that Shaped American Destiny".......which may have been description of the match including Springfields, Sharps and other military guns of the period.......don't believe it was an army 1870's trial though........will drive me nuts until I find it.
