Portrait of Brigadier General William Polk Hardeman, (1816-1898), Confederate States Army, in uniform of Texas Ranger first lieutenant. A native of Tennessee, Hardeman moved to Matagorda, Texas with his father in 1835. He fought in the Texas Revolution and in numerous Indian campaigns during the 1830s and 1840s. This daguerreotype of Hardeman, made in either Texas or Mexico, shows him at the time he was serving as a scout in Company A of Colonel John C. Hay’s First Regiment, Texas Mounted Volunteers (Texas Ranger) during the Mexican War of 1846-1848. During the American Civil War Hardeman served in the Confederate States Army as a Texas cavalry commander and eventually was promoted to the rank of brigadier general. He was one of the founders of what is now Texas A&M University. Hardeman is buried in the Texas State Cemetery in Austin. Source: Lawrence T. Jones III.
