Although the development of repeating arms spelled doom for big fighting bowies, some Westerners still clung to the formidable blades. This circa late 1870s frontiersman looks like he’s ready for anything—check out his Winchester rifle, Colt tucked in his cartridge belt and big, heavy bladed spear-point bowie.

Here's my "soldier's knife" that I built about 20 years ago....not as nice as Chuck or Lloyd would build, but fit my need.

Nice looking knife. It looks like it will get the job done.

Thanks Steve..! Actually I haven't had the occasion to put it to work yet. My field dressing knives are generally smaller and easier to handle gutting and skinning. Thankfully I haven't so far had the need for a fighting knife...........yet!

You fellas are probably right on the Bowie being a photo prop.

Since it appears thrust through his belt with no sheath, I'd guess prop as well.

Good looking knife Doug! I found dad and I a couple knives along those lines. I need to get us some better sheaths made up.

Josh
this was a non traditional sheath made by my departed friend and brother Hank Kluin who owned "F. Burgess and Co" and was a McClellen saddle maker...................but I like it.
